Rose Colors and Their Meanings

"A rose by any other name would still smell as sweet." While this quaint cliche is true, the color of the rose not only affects the smell of the flower, but its meaning when given to another. Most people are aware that a red rose denotes passion and true love, while a yellow rose is usually given in friendship. After that, however, the waters get a bit muddy and it is easy to send a message that you do not mean. In addition, the meanings of the rose color can change based upon the culture of the recipient. While roses are almost always appreciated, it is important to know the meaning of every bloom.

Red Roses

The red rose has a long and rich history associated with true love and romance. Luckily, this is a rather universal symbol, so it is hard to go wrong. If you want to express your love and devotion to a significant other, the red rose is the top choice. No matter what culture your lover is from, the red rose will send the message that you are a devoted companion. In fact, across the ages of time, there is evidence that all cultures have used this flower to honor a loving commitment. Be careful if you are in a new relationship, however. Sending red roses can indicate that you are ready to move to another level, so be sure you mean it before you order the bouquet.

White Roses

While red roses are very straightforward, the white rose has meanings that are shrouded in mystery. There is some variation among cultures as to what the white rose means. Today, most people send white roses to honor new beginnings, innocence and purity. They also come with a certain element of secrecy. While not many people give white roses as a gift, they are widely-used in wedding decor. The newness and purity desired in traditional marriage is the most classic use of this color. On the opposite end of the spectrum, white blooms are seen frequently in funeral arrangements, denoting the new beginning of the deceased in their eternal journey.

Pink Roses

Pink is a color that is very versatile in roses. Instead of expressing devout love, this color lets the recipient know that you feel admiration for them. Pink is the most common rose color in nature, meaning this bloom has a long and deep history. Pink roses were easily cut from backyard gardens, meaning they were a strong gift of friendship. Today, pink roses are still given to friends, as well as incorporated into arrangements sent in sympathy. 

Yellow Roses

The yellow rose is the most common symbol of friendship. While older cultures used the color yellow to signify warmth, today's yellow roses are sent to celebrate joyous occasions, honor friendship and encourage someone you care for to get well. 

Orange Roses

Orange roses are not as common as many of the other colors. They have a very interesting and deep meaning, however, and should be examined by givers more often. Orange is a mix of the primary colors red and yellow, and the meaning is also a blend of these shades. Passion and desire are the most common meanings when these roses are sent. In many cases, the blending of love and friendship is applied and givers send orange roses to express their desire to move forward in a relationship.
